Who do you trust: Brian Wilson, or "Inside the Hits"?
[edit]Our article currently states:
"Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)" is a song written by Brian Wilson and Tony Asher for the American rock band The Beach Boys. It is the fourth track on the album Pet Sounds. Like the majority of songs on Pet Sounds, "Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)" is about a melodic and introspective view on desperation and a crumbling romance.[3] The song started off as a wordless chorale.[4] "Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)" is one of three songs on Pet Sounds where Brian is the only Beach Boy performing. On the line "Listen to my heart...beat", Brian stated: "I felt very deeply about that line. One of the sweetest songs I ever sang. I have to say I'm proud of it. The innocence of youth in my voice, of being young and childlike. I think that's what people liked."[citation needed]
I don't think there is such a thing as a "desperate" look at a "crumbling" romance that features "innocence", the sense of being "young and childlike" . . . is there?
Hey, I wouldn't be the first to say Brian Wilson's still a little whacko, and yes, the song does sound terribly fraught, even doomed. As if the song could be titled "Don't Talk (We'll Just Get Into an Argument That Way)"
Still and all, taking the words of three rock journalists over the word of Brian Wilson? . . . Oh, hell, I just don't know . . . .
BTW, what's the third song on which Brian is the only Beach Boy present? There's "Don't Talk", there's "Caroline, No", and . . . what, "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times?" There are multiple vocal overdubs but they could all be done by him. Who else would want to sing that song? There's something repugnant about complaining about being too advanced. I wouldn't have sung it, that's for sure! Especially after "Mr. Advanced" decided bed was the place to be, all the time.
